TE TONKA HA RENDEZVOUS &
BENTON FREMONT DAYS ![]()
The Hole-in-the-Mountain Park and Snyder's Flats is home to our annual "Benton Fremont Days" celebration. The location is one of Lake Benton's most historic sites. It was first seen in 1830 by a French fur trader, Joseph La Framboise. In 1838, and U.S. government party headed by explorers Joseph Nicolas Nicollet and John C. Fremont explored the area.
In the 1850's, the "Fort Ridgely and South Pass Road" was laid out past this area, better known as the Nobles Road, so named after Col. William H. Nobles who was the government supervisor of this new immigrant trail to the west. In the 1860's, John Snyder purchased the land and settled here . . . hence the site's name.
In June of 1888, the Civil War Encampment was held here -- Lake Benton's first great celebration. It was the encampment of the GAR and was the Union's Civil War reunion, which was attended by over 5,000 people. Ever since these early days, Snyder's Flats has played an important part in the history of Lake Benton. Many celebrations have been held there throughout the years and the public school uses the area for sports events.
Snyder's Flats is a wonderful natural amphitheater, with hills and beautiful timber on the west and north sides and on the south, the Hole-in-the-Mountain, while to the east "Old Lookout" raises his lofty peak to the skies.
Every 2nd Weekend in August, we celebrate "Benton Fremont Days" at this historic location. Combined with this historic festival is a Te Tonka Ha Rendezvous, sponsered by the Brookings Muzzleloaders and the Hehdoka Knap In This is an arts, crafts, food and music festival which brings crafters from a three-state area, with entertainment provided by the Silver Creek Mavericks.
Watch as the Silver Creek Mavericks perform old west gun shoots, rob a Lake Benton Downtown Historic Bank building and share their knowledge of historic old west legends. Blackpower rifle shoots performed all weekend. Food cooked over an open flame fire. Enjoy delicious buffalo stew on Sunday and a corn boil on saturday. Fun for all ages.
