For those who enjoy Western trail rides, traveling in buggies, surreys and wagons, as well as taking part in saddle horse games and events, this is your weekend. And if you particularly love horses, Lake Benton is definitely the place for you in the summer. Every June we host our annual Saddle Horse Holiday, a famed occasion which has grown each year since its inception way back in 1947! During this celebration, the entire valley is given over to events relating to saddle horses and all the fun that goes along with them.
The Sunday parade is a special feature never to be forgotten. But probably the most wonderful sight is hundreds of horses riding the trails on the hills surrounding the village, a breathtaking event to witness. More than 800 riders and participants come to "the valley" for the fun, excitement, and nostalgia or horseback adventures. Picture yourself riding through the rolling hills that surround Lake Benton. Enjoy the friendly competition that ensues when equestrians gather.
Not only do we celebrate our past with the many horse-related activities, we also encourage families to gather. Classes from the local school hold reunions, enjoying the food, dancing, and fellowship. Free entertainment, games, races, the Miss Lake Benton pageant, and a street dance round out the weekend.
Along with all these events, the Saddle Horse Holiday features a trail ride which courses its way through Hole-in-the-Mountain and the hills to the south and east of Lake Benton, culminating in a grand parade downtown.
