BRUSH, GEORGE -- Seeking to locate any information or descendents of GEORGE BRUSH (1854-1926) who farmed in or near Jolley beginning about 1883. He may have also lived in Raymond, and in Day County for a period. GEORGE BRUSH was born in New York harbor on Feb. 17, 1854, just as his parents (Francis Charles Brush & Mary Jane Humes) arrived from Clogher, Ireland. He was the first-born of 10 children; the second being my grandfather Rolin Charles Brush (1854-1913) of Antigo, Wisconsin. GEORGE BRUSH was raised in Waupaca County, Wisconsin and married Alma/Edna Dean there on July 4, 1882. Their seven children were Jerry (born 1884; who is believed to have died at age 9), Sidney D., Irvin F., Evelyn M., Add LeClaire, May Bristor, and a George B. of Garden City. And this son George B. had a daughter named Dorothy. GEORGE BRUSH died in Carpenter on June 28, 1926.

I understand there is a Jay Covell farm in Clark Co. with an unmarked grave on it. Jay Covell is part of a puzzle that I have
never been able to solve. The following gives a brief history of part of my family line that may include Jay, Samuel,Covell married Anna Mack in Jan., 1770. They had 6 children, one of who was Harvey, b. in 1791. Harvey married Orra House in 1812. They had 11 children, one of whom was William R. (Robertson?) Covell, b. 1818. He married Mary Janett and they may have moved to SD. William died in 1842.

At this point there is a break but then I find Mamie Covell, b. 1871 in OH, died in Bradley, SD sometime in the 1920's. Jay
Covell, b. 1873, was probably a brother of Mamie. As both were born in OH and I suspect they probably are the
children of Joseph Inman Covell (1845-1917) and his wife, Harriet Hilton, born in England. Joseph is buried on Catawba
Island, Erie Co., OH.

I've also found a Joseph I. Covell, b. about 1846, who married Sarah Hilton. They had two sons, Earl Dwight and Charles
Elmer who were born in 1883 and 1888. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a photo of a Bennet family. A wonder old photo taken of the parents and four little ones. On the back it just says "The Bennets. Family friends of Kate Ryan" and gives the name of two towns. It seems the one who wrote on the back wasn't sure which town these Bennets lived in. Kate Ryan was my g.g.grandmother and I'm in my late 50's so that should tell you this photo
is very old. I'd like to return it to the family if I can locate them.

He is buried in Prairie Hill Cemetery. His sister, SUSAN A. McKEE, also lived there. I was given a copy of the Final Account & petititon for Distribution in the estate of Susan A. McKee, Deceased, State of SD, County of Clark. She was born 13 Jun 1865 in Kankakee County, IL and died 31 May 1924 in Morgan County, Colorado and is buried there. I am trying to find evidence of my family which farmed around the Willow Lake area in the early 1900s. They were Ira and Maude Lewis. Maude's maiden name was "Roberdeau". My Dad "Clair'' was born near there and is entered in the birth records in Clark County (File # 749347 - May 27, 1901). Near as I can recall there were two sisters Lucy and Tillie, 5 brothers - Sam, Harry, Fred, Ray and Clair. Harry and Sam remained in the US while the rest of the family emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada.

I would very much like to trace descendants of my uncle Harry. He had three children two girls and a boy. I don't recall the boys name but the girls were Naomi and Jennifer I believe.

Am trying to help a woman in Spearfish find out about WW 11 Vets who went to the war from West River and were KIA. One of them is Maurice Naramore, there are no people by that name here ever that I can find. I found a homestead record for a Charley Naramore, for Marvin and Minnie, 1892, 1896 and 1905. I did find that two girls by that name with a father Charles and mother Elizabeth were born in Clark County 1898 and 1900, this man would have been born around 1919. Because he was KIA, we don't know when he died. Also three marriages show up one is for a Charles Nov 6, 1896, Two girls also
got married Nina and Stell, 1896 and 1906. I wondered if the Maurice Naramore was from Clark County, and if anyone knows anything about when he died or of family that would help write a profile for the book she is writing. Please email if you can help. I would like to know if he might show up in the book "I served Uncle Sam in WW 11" by Effie Ruth Larson.

They owned a farm at that time. Her husband was Jens Jensen and they had three children Anna, Laura and Walter. I think they were married in Iowa. Her parents, Peter and Birgitte Jorgensen lived and died in Audubon County, Iowa. She was listed as a survivor in a brothers obituary in 1941 so I know she died sometime after that. I am looking for any information that there might be on any of the HINK family/families that lived in Clark Cty, SD. I noticed that there was a Biography listing of ALBERT HINK in the Southern Clark Cty List. There was also a Marriage Notice of LIZZIE L HINK - Sept 1910 in the Marriage Listing, There was also a Death Notice of MRS JOHN J HINK (Cour) August 1910 - listed under the Deaths - I believe that my Great Grandfather, JOHN JACOB HINK is buried in the Raymond City Cemetery - but I do not have a positive confirmation on this. He was born May 9, 1845 in Germany .. So if anyone has a listing of the persons buried in the cemetery, I would really be interested in having a listing of ALL the HINK's in the Cemetery.
I would really appreciate it if anyone has any information on my family if they would email me at my Email Address:

Could you please tell me the name of the drug store that was in operation in 1900 in Willow Lake. My grandmother
worked there and met my grandfather there. She served him a glass of lemonade and was so entranced by him forgot to put in the sugar. They were married in Willow Lake in 1901. The family name was Axness and related to the Seim family. The later family lived there for years. The Axness family moved to Sisseton, SD. Thank you for the information. Enjoy the site. Are there any publications that include names of early residents in Willow Lake or information on the businesses, etc. Thank you. Margaret

Hello.........I am looking for information regarding my great-grandmother, Rachel Kelly.
It is my understanding she lived in the Garden City area. It seems her death, although kept a family secret for some time, was a murder. I understand there was a newspaper article published about her death, although I have no idea what year it was. My grandmother, her daughter, May, came to America at age 4, in 1904, so it wouldve been after that year. This is my
mothers side of the family, and my most difficult to research. Any information you can give would be most helpful. My grandmother, May Kelly Bloom, and grandfather, Charles Bloom are both buried in a cemetary in Garden City. I know there are more family members buried there, but I am not at all sure exactly who. My uncle William Bloom is one for sure, possibly a great uncle or two also, with last names of Kelly. I look forward to any information you may give me.

She moved to Vienna, South Dakota to live with her daughter Rose Ellen and her son-in-law, Thomas Smith. She later re-married. Hi:
I have been looking for about 2 or 3 years, but keep getting dead ends. Maybe you can helped. Okay, my great grandparents got married after the 1880 census, but sometime later that year. I don't know if it was in Clark, Clark County or Minnesota. I was told by an aunt that my great grandmother parents lived in Minnesota near the borer. But I was told her maiden name was Bender. I looked in the 1870/1880 for the family with no luck. If they had a heavy accent, I tried Fender/Binder/Vender. But no success. Loudema J. was born July 1855 in Wisconsin father born NY and mother born PA. I was trying to find her with her parents because have no knowledge who they are. George Washington Davison & Loudema had 5 children all born in South Dakota.
1) Beatrice L. Davison born Oct 1882
2) Ross Oliver Davison born 26 Feb. 1884 in Clark, Clark, SD (my grandfather).
3) Flora Faey Davison born 28 Jul 1886 (Twin)
4) Florence E. Davison born 28 Jul. 1886 (Twin)
5) George Davison born Jun 1889 in Clark, Clark, SD went by Buddy married Rose N. Mather.

Beatrice had a girl (out of wedlock) she appears on the 1910 Census as Faye.
1920 Census Faye is not living or her mother in house hold.

If anyone can shield any light to this. I would really appreciate it. Ready to give up on this after so long and nothing.Thank you Roberta (Buck) Martinez

I am looking for my paternal grandfather and grandmother. The following is the only information that I have. Grandfather 'George M. Williams' was born in Iowa and moved to Clark, South Dakota some time after 1905. He had a barber shop in Clark, S. Dakota Grandmother 'Clara Cross' was born in South Dakota. Her father was "Pathanial? Cross" a traveling preacher. My father was born in Iowa, Merle Elmond Williams on May 1, 1905. So, they traveled to Clark, S. Dakota sometime after that. They were divorced sometime in the 20's or 30's. Clara Cross Williams was a nurse and would travel to homes and farms. She was murdered in th late 30's or early 40's by a farmer that she was carring for. Her case was somewhat famous as they new she was buried somewhere on the farm as they found part of her burnt purse. The detective later found her buried beneath a recently killed dog on the farm. I would appreciate any information about any of them. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I just now found the Clark County pages while I was shotgunning for some of my father's forbears who spent time there. I was very pleased to find the site, and even more interested when I roamed through the marriage and death lists from the local newspapers.

Dad's people were Nelson, Parrott and Berdan, and I'm grateful for some of the dates shown in the lists mentioned.  Are you aware of any others who are working the Parrott and Berdan lines?  Some years ago, I went through the films of the Raymond Gazette 1883-1889 (June 1887 through May 1888 are missing), and transcribed everything I could find that pertained to those people, as well as some things that were of general interest. The results of that work exist as a file that represents 7 closely typed pages, and I'd be happy to share that with you or anyone who is interested.

What I am looking for in particular is any info on the BURDITT surname, particularly Hattie Burditt. She is listed in the Northern Clark County Databases. Dorssey.  His uncle also live in Clark and apparently owned some grain silos or elevators about that same time.  His name was Victor Anderson/Andersen we are not positive on the spelling.  They may have come from Canada and they left Clark and moved to the Los Angeles area about 1920/21 time period I believe.  We would appreciate any information that you would be able to find.

Thank you so much for your time and trouble.

Subject: Jane Meade

Jane was my great-grandmother, buried in Willow Lakes Cemetery . Date of death is 2-1-1925. She and my great-grandfather separated (not divorced) in 1892, and she "ran off with the hired man" (Al Meade)after the judge refused to give her a divorce. My grandfather, George Chatwood, lived in MN and WI until he died in 1913.  I do not know if she and Al ever married...but, I am wondering what became of her daughters by a previous marriage to a Spillane--Anna and Mabel. I was out in the area a month ago and was unable to find any Meades in the area. I had hoped to get a copy of an obit, but unfortunately, they do not want to disturb the bound issues of the paper.

If you can come up with any information, I will be very grateful.

I have found by checking the Clark/Codington County census for 1900 that Joseph was born in Iowa, and that he had re-married an Isabelle or Irabelle & had one son, William at that time.

My g-grandfather , Peter Bayer, came to Clark Co., in the 1880's. He was supposed to have been the one who named present-day Washington Twp, Berlin Twp. This was not popular when WW I started, so was renamed more patriotically. He died before 1900, and I would like some information on his death, circumstances, living relatives, etc. He was supposed to have been born in Bavaria, came to the US possibly by way of PA, settled in Washington Co., WI, around 1860. Several children were baptized there in 1865. Name at that time is listed as Baier. From there the family went to Dodge Co., MN where my grandmother Christina (Tina) was born and thence to SD. I believe some of the family was also in Hamlin Co.

Any information on Peter, his family or where exactly they came from, would be appreciated

My grandfather, George L. Kiggins was married to Mary Holiday abt 1905 or a little later. They had five children: Charles, Edward, Evelyn, Josephine, and Walter. Mary died in a fire when she mistook gasoline for kerosene for starting the fire in the wood stove. This was on Easter Sunday about 1915-20. George then married my grandmother, Margaret (Maggie) Brower. They lived at Willow Lake and Vienna, where they lived when my father, Mearle, was born in 1923. They were living in Sioux Falls when William and Lewis was born in !926 and 1927. George and Maggie divorced about 1931 and the three boys were taken to the Sioux Falls Children's Home for adoption. My dad's adoption files mentions there was another birth but we don't know if it was a stillborn or what. Apparently Maggie was not present at the time the boys were left at the Home. We have no idea where Maggie went or whether she was even living at this time

I am looking for facts or family of any of these people. Thank you, Linda L. Killebrew

Subject: Christian Burying Ground, South Elrod, Clark County, SD

Posted  4/28/1998

I am looking for any information on my grandfather, Richard Anthan Thomas born in Van North Township, Licking County, Ohio, April 3, 1848 and died November 27, 1895 and was buried in the Christian Burying Ground, South Elrod, Clark County, SD. I have been told that it is an unmarked grave and that there are approximately 4 unmarked graves in the same area. My grandfather and my grandmother, Mary Ann Brown Thomas had 10 children. My father, Joseph Edward Thomas was the youngest and born in Clark County January 21, 1895. They raised wheat and traveled between Van Wert County, Ohio and Clark County, SD during the late 1880's until my grandfather's death. I am unsure of exactly where they lived in Clark County. My uncle Robert Abner Thomas said he thought it was near a lake or a pond. Dad always told the grandkids that he was born in a badger hole in a blizzard. (The blizzard) I believe, the badger hole was more than likely a sod hut.) I also remember my uncle Ora Anthan Thomas telling that when he was a kid, he remembered seeing Indians on their ponies on the hills. Thank you in advance for any information you may have. I am willing to share any information that I have that may be of interest.

Thanks! Mary Jo VonFeldt, Stafford, Texas
