Following high school she graduated from the Ivanhoe Teacher Training Department with training for rural teaching. She taught country school for six years in the Lincoln county area. While she was teaching she met Harald Madsen. They were married on July 9, 1947 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Arco. Their union was blessed with two children and 59 years of life together. The couple farmed for 35 years and made their home at the now century old “Sunnyside Farm” south of Tyler. In 1985 they moved into town. In June 2006, Margaret was hospitalized in Sioux Falls, SD. She then transferred to Tyler Healthcare Center where she died from heart and lung complications Monday morning, July 17, 2006 at the age of 84 years, four months and 22 days. Margaret was a member of Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler. She was very active in Danebod Ladies Aid, WELCA, Fall Folk Committee and was one of the founders of the Three-Day Camps. She was also a member of Royal Neighbors of America and Tyler Seniors Group. She enjoyed gardening, dancing and teaching folk dancing, quilting, straw craft, Danish cross stitch, hardanger, tatting, and entertaining. Heritage and tradition were very important to her. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends, and they always knew “the coffee was on” at her home served with her great homemade cookies.
